Cancer-types

The Institute’s research is mainly focused on the following cancer types:

  • Gynecological Malignancies
The institute performs research on archival material from patients with different gynecological malignancies, in close collaboration with excellent gynecologic oncologists and pathologist.
  • Prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is the most frequent type of cancer among men in many western countries. For norwegian men, in all ages, prostate cancer was the most common cancer between year 2000 and 2004, followed by colorectal cancer.
  • Colorectal cancer
We are currently working on three main projects on colorectal cancer, in cooperation with other Norwegian hospitals. On all projects we are investigating large scale genomic instability as a possible prognostic marker using Nucleotyping methods. We are also making TMA (tissue microarray) and experimental databases for studying immunohistochemistry on colorectal specimens.
  • Breast cancer
Breast cancer is by far the most common form of cancer in women. Our research is based on the following materials: L45/N05 DCIS and L41/M99 Breast cancer, stage I/II.
  • Brain tumors
For adults, primary intracranial tumors account for 3.5 % of all cancer cases in Norway. These constitute a very heterogeneous group with large variations in the degree of malignancy, speed of growth and prognosis. Histological diagnosis is therefore crucial for the choice of treatment.
  • Barrett’s Esophagus – BE-UCL
Barrett’s esophagus, a complication of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), increases the risk for adenocarcinoma of the esophagus. This is the more common type of esophageal cancer. We have received material from 130 BE patients separated into two groups to be prepared and analyzed by IMI. We have also accepted 300 prepared samples to be analyzed. This study is in collaboration with the University College London.
