Traditionally, pathology diagnoses have been carried out with the help of a microscope. Though the microscope will continue to be the most important tool for many years to come, developments within digital pathology can give the pathology profession the “revolution” it needs to meet many of the challenges it faces. The requirements for and access to pathology services are under pressure. Sub-specialization within the pathology field is increasing and the need for additional diagnostics through immunohistochemical methods is increasing each year.
Internationally, the introduction of digital pathology is regarded as the paradigm shift that the pathology profession needs and has been waiting for. With current technology, it is possible to create IT solutions that can replace the traditional microscopes in many situations, and that can contribute to more objective and measurable analyses.
The institutes research activities and the development of digital tools for image processing and analysis can be discovered through the Interpath web portal. We hope that in the near future Interpath will be a national reference center for Virtual Microscopy and TMA.
